"Change my IP address" is one of those requests that means two completely different things depending on which address you're talking about. You have at least two: a private IP that identifies your device on your own network, and a public IP that the rest of the internet sees. Changing one is a two-minute local task; changing the other depends on your internet provider and sometimes isn't fully in your hands at all.

First, know which IP you mean#

The address on your laptop or phone — something like 192.168.1.42 or 10.0.0.5 — is your private IP. It's handed out by your router and only exists inside your home or office. These come from the reserved ranges set aside for private networks, which we cover in RFC 1918 private IP ranges. Nothing on the public internet ever sees it.

The address the world sees is your public IP, assigned to your router by your ISP. Every device in your home shares it, because your router translates between the private addresses inside and the one public address outside. When a website, a game server, or an email host talks about "your IP," it means this one. Match the method to the address. Changing your private IP fixes conflicts and quirks on your own network. Changing your public IP is what affects how the outside world sees you.

Changing your private (local) IP#

Your device leases its private IP from the router using DHCP, and that lease can be dropped and renewed on demand. Doing so usually hands you a different address from the pool — handy when two devices have collided on the same one, or a stale lease is causing connection trouble.

  • Windows. Open Command Prompt and run ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew. The first drops your current lease; the second requests a fresh one.
  • macOS. Go to System Settings → Network → your active connection → Details → TCP/IP, and click Renew DHCP Lease. You can also switch the configuration to Manual and type an address in your router's range.
  • Linux. Depending on your setup, sudo dhclient -r then sudo dhclient, or bring the interface down and up with nmcli. Same idea: release, then re-request.
  • Any device. Toggling Wi-Fi off and on, or forgetting and rejoining the network, forces a new DHCP request without touching the command line.

If you want a device to keep a fixed private address — useful for a printer, a home server, or port forwarding — don't hard-set it on the device and hope for the best. Instead, create a DHCP reservation in your router that ties that address to the device's MAC address. The router then always offers the same private IP, with none of the conflicts that manual static assignment invites.

Changing your public IP#

This is the one most people are actually after, and it hinges on how your ISP assigns addresses. Most residential connections use dynamic IPs: the ISP leases you an address and can change it later. Because it's a lease, letting it expire is the lever you pull.

In rough order of effort, here's what works:

  • Power-cycle the router — properly. A quick reboot often gives you the same address back, because the lease hasn't expired and the ISP simply renews it. To actually change, unplug the router (and modem, if separate) and leave it off for a good while — long enough that the DHCP lease lapses on the ISP's side. Overnight is reliable; a few minutes usually isn't.
  • Release the lease from the router. Many routers have a Release / Renew button on the WAN or Internet status page in their admin panel. Releasing before you power off makes an address change more likely than a cold reboot alone.
  • Change your device's connection. Move from Wi-Fi to a phone's mobile hotspot, or connect somewhere else entirely, and your public IP changes immediately — it's now a different network's address. Mobile networks in particular rotate IPs often as you move between towers.
  • Ask your ISP. Support can often push a new address, and if you need one that never changes, you can request a static IP — usually a paid add-on aimed at people hosting services. A static IP is the opposite goal: you're asking them to stop it from changing.

One caveat worth knowing: some ISPs tie your lease to your modem or router's MAC address, so the same hardware keeps getting the same IP no matter how long it's off. And a growing number use CGNAT (carrier-grade NAT), where many customers share one public IP behind the provider's own translation layer. Why people change their IP#

The reasons are usually practical rather than cloak-and-dagger:

  • Escaping a block or rate limit. A site or game server that has throttled or banned your current address will often let you back in on a new one.

Confirm the change actually happened#

Whatever method you use, don't assume it worked — verify. Note your current public IP before you start, make the change, then look again. If the address is different, it took. If it's identical, your lease was renewed rather than reassigned (try a longer power-off), your ISP is pinning it to your hardware, or you're behind CGNAT.

The honest bottom line: changing your private IP is quick and fully in your control. Changing your public IP is possible for most people with patience and a properly expired lease, guaranteed with a static-IP request, and side-stepped instantly with a VPN — but on some networks the provider holds the reins, and no amount of rebooting will move it.
